Introduction to the class

Hello class, my name is Mary Gillespie. I am 21.  I am from Oklahoma City and am currently living at home. I am a senior and I am graduating in May. My major is Health and Exercise Science. I am also applying to Physical therapy school. I am taking exercise physiology, exercise testing and prescription, sports officiating, capstone, and this class this semester. I am also working two jobs. I work as a tech at physical therapy central and I also coach gymnastics at Metro gymnastics. They are both close to downtown Oklahoma City.

I have one spoiled puppy, Laken. She is a miniature Australian shepherd. She really is one of my best friends. My mom has two dogs that are practically mine too. One is a long haired miniature dachshund and chihuahua mix and the other is a dachshund. Their names are Lucy and Shadow.

I am the youngest out of four siblings. I have three step sisters and a step brother. However, we all look alike and they are more like my sisters and brother since I have known them since I was 5. Between all of them, I am an aunt to eight nieces and one nephew.

My interests include anything that has to do with summer: going to the beach, going to the lake, wake boarding, and anything outdoors. I also really enjoy crafting, spending time with family, traveling, playing board games and going shopping.

Just like any other college student, I love Netflix. My favorite shows that I have watched are One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl. I am currently watching 90210. My all time favorite tv show is family feud with Steve Harvey as the host.

Over break, I spent a lot of time with my family and my boyfriend. I only went out of town for one weekend. On that weekend, I went to Murphy, Texas to have Christmas with my uncle, aunt, and two cousins.

  1. Hello, Mary! I think we might be in the same sports officiating class. Is it on Wednesdays at 2:00 pm? (If not, nevermind!)

I also love summer, from the beautiful warm weather to outdoor activities to longer daylight hours. I hate leaving for work at 7:30 in the morning these days and it still being dark outside. :( It seems we do a lot of the same activities; I like crafting (especially scrapbooking), traveling to new places, playing board games (my favorites are Clue, Monopoly, and Trivial Pursuit), and shopping.

It's nice to meet you. :)

  2. Oh, what a cute picture of you and your mom and the dogs, Mary! I didn't know there was a miniature breed of Australian shepherds; how cool! Australian shepherds and Australian cattle dogs are both so smart; if I were ever to get a dog, that would be a breed I would consider for sure. Maybe you could do a project about dogs in myth and legend for this class: you will find dog stories all over the world, all types of dogs and all types of stories! If you're curious, just look at this link which goes to all the stories about dogs at Sacred Texts Archive, which is a great resource for this class. So many stories! :-)

  3. I am also the youngest of 4 too. I love being the baby of the family. I also love spending time with my family...both immediate & extended. OMGosh...One Tree Hill & 90210 were some of my favorite shows when I was younger. IF you like those shows, I bet you would like the show called Gilmore Girls. It's both drama & comedy. As for Family Feud, Steve Harvey cracks me up. I love how he reacts sometimes when the answers are even just the slightest risqué. For our Christmas break, we were supposed to go see my family, but the weather turned somewhat bad and we decided that traveling there wasn't worth the risk. I'm so glad that you were able to see some of your family. By the way, I wanted to say that I love your first name. The reason is that one of my daughter's names is Mary. She is 6 ½ years old and such a wonderful child.

  4. Hi, Mary! Like you, I am also graduating in May. Your classes sound very interesting, and best of luck in Physical therapy school! Wow, working two jobs while in school is impressive. I share your interest in dogs, and count my parents dogs as basically my own as well. I noticed that you are the baby of the family too, just like me, except your family is a little bigger. Netflix is the best thing ever invented. I've never watched an entire episode of Family Feud, but it looks pretty funny based on the video clips I have seen.

  5. Well, I think I need to start with Steve Harvey Family Feud. The Best. Hands Down. Also, I live off Netflix. Of course, I don't really get into Gossip Girl or One Tree Hill or anything like that. I'd rather watch The Office or the documentary about the honey badgers starring me (Stoffel the Honey Badger). That's awesome that you're interested in physical therapy. I took physiology over last summer, and it was crazy busy.

  6. You must be busy with all that you have going on. I'm not sure how you have time to do much of anything. Like you, I am also the youngest in my family. I have two older sisters and between my sisters and I, we have a total of 9 kids in the family so i have quite a big family too. I don't have as many dogs as you do though. I only have one. Your dogs are adorable.

  7. Hey Mary! It sounds like you got your life figured out, that's awesome! You must be super busy with that schedule and two jobs, though! I can't imagine! I love the summer, too. I'm ready for these cold days to be over!!

I spent the past summer in Dallas, and my mentors were from Murphy, Texas! I've been meaning to check it out, but haven't had the chance quite yet!

    Have a great senior year!

  8. Hi, Mary! I have to ask: how much coffee do you drink every day? I'm definitely in awe of your work ethic. Also, your dogs are so cute! Like you, I also enjoy everything that has to do with summer. Cold weather always gives me cabin fever. Anyway, I hope you have a great rest of your semester, and I can't wait to read more of what you write!

  9. Hi Mary! We have the same major and goal for PT! I really hope you get accepted into the program!! Your dogs are adorable!! Honestly, anything to do with summer is my absolute favorite too! Especially going to the beach. If being a beach bum was a profession than that would definitely be my job haha. I can't believe you have two jobs and still go to school full time!! I struggled having one job and going to school full time. But good for you! I wish I had your work ethic!

  10. Hi, Mary! I think it is pretty cool that you are going to PT school. I am also looking to get in the medical field by being a nurse someday. Also, your dogs are adorable. I want a puppy one day, but I have to wait until I live on my own someday. I also love Family Feud with Steve Harvey. I spend some time when I get bored looking at Family Feud fails. They can be so funny! Finally, good luck to you in PT school!

  11. Hey Mary! You seem to have a wonderful, and rather large, family! That is awesome!! Your dogs look soooo cute. Just like you I love Netflix, crafting, hanging out with family, and playing games. I wish I was better at all of that outdoor stuff, so I admire people who love it. Its one of those things I would love to love. Congrats on graduating soon and going to PT is AWESOME! That is such a great ambition. It is nice to meet you Mary!

  12. Health and exercise sciences, AND two jobs? You're a machine! It's obvious from that pic that you really love your dogs and that they have a special connection with you. You watching the old 90210? That era of the show was the best. Also, what kind of clients are you hoping to serve in physical therapy? More gymnastics oriented? Or just anyone really?

  13. Your dogs are sooo cute! seeing them makes me miss my dog back home.
It sounds like your semester is pretty rough, especially with two jobs. That's very impressive! Good luck with the Physical Therapy application! I know it's very intense and competitive. Did you apply around the country or just to OU?
Good luck this semester! I hope the rest of it goes well! :)

  14. Hi Mary! Congrats on being so close to graduation as well! It is a bittersweet feeling to know that the undergraduate portion of college is coming to an end.. I love Australian Shepherds; they are some of the best dogs ever. I have never been able to see a miniature one in person. Physical therapy school sounds like it would be such a great opportunity. Good luck on applying!

  15. Mary, that’s awesome that you want to be a physical therapist. That sounds like it would be a great career. I am minoring in Health and Exercise Science, but I haven’t taken any of those classes that you’re taking now. They sound like they would be really interesting, especially the exercise testing. And like you, I also love being outdoors. Good luck on PT school!
